Robert ‘Nesta’ Marley was born in St Ann’s Bay, Jamaica, 6th of February 1945.
Marley was known as the voice of the ghetto for all oppressed people irrespective of race, religion, status or gender. In songs like One Love, No Woman No Cry, Get Up Stand Up, and Redemption Song, he brought us all the hope of a better world.
This year the well known Jamaican producer Lee Scratch Perry will be live on stage, which is no coincidence. Perry’s work as producer made him an important key person in the development of Bob Marley, and among other things he helped The Wailers improve their songwriting. He was also the one who introduced Bob Marley to his studio band The Upsetters, consisting of brothers Aston
‘Family Man’ Barrett and Carlton Barrett. The latter two later played an important part in the life of Bob Marley as they became part of his band on all albums and tours. The Wailers collaborated officially with Perry from August 1970 until April 1971 at Randy’s Studios and many people regard the recordings from this period as the best ever made by The Wailers. Tracks like ’African Herbsman’, ‘Kaya’, ‘Sun Is Shining’ and ‘Duppy Conqueror’ to mention just a few.
Since Perry’s time with The Wailers and throughout the 1970s he has been behind a long series of reggae albums, of which many are still considered classic.
In 2003 he won a Grammy for the album “Jamaican E.T.” Copenhagen can expect a concert out of the ordinary as Perry’s performances also to a large extent use mystical and special effects.
Gappy Ranks is based in England and in the last couple of year has had several reggae hits. Songs like
’Heaven In Your Eyes’ and ’Gyal Me Love’ have been played heavily in clubs all over the world and been at the top of several charts. This time will be Ranks’ first visit to Denmark ever.
