Over the last ten years, the name Buju Banton (a.k.a. Gargamel) has become synonymous with modern reggae. Having metamorphosed from a brash teenage phenomenon into a self assured deejay and singer, Buju’s fusion of traditional roots rock, contemporary R&B and dancehall DJ’ing have earned him a prophetlike status in his Jamaican homeland.
Undoubtedly, Buju is one of the most popular musicians in Jamaican history, having hit the charts there suddenly in 1992, with a string of hits including ‘Bogle’, ‘Love Me Browning’ and ‘Love Black Woman’, all three of which were massive hits in Jamaica and less so abroad.
Later Banton converted to Rastafarianism and revolutionized dancehall by employing the live instrumentation and social consciousness of classic roots reggae. He first adopted the approach on his 1995 classic ‘Til Shiloh, catapulting him to the world as conscious dancehall’s greatest international ambassador, as Bob Marley had been for roots reggae.
Watch out for the soon-to-be-released new album from Buju Banton – RASTA GOT SOUL.
Assassin is currently one of the hottest young dancehall artists in Jamaica – and with the debut album ‘Infiltration’ he is entering the US marked by storm. Over that last couple of years or so – he has been voicing over the hottest rhythms by the hottest producers.
Coming from the Penthouse camp lead by Donovan Germain, the man behind Buju Banton and Wayne Wonder, Assassin rocks the dance floor with a good sense of wittiness, humour, common sense and a fast tongue.
Sky Juice sound system will be spinning the best music in reggae and dancehall warming up the place to make this a hot summer night to remember.
